Membrane Modules for Ultrapure Water

Ultrapure water is the working fluid of semiconductor, boiler feed water, and pharmaceutical applications. Its quality requirements — sub-ppb ionic contamination, sub-ppb dissolved gases, near-theoretical resistivity — drive the technology choice at every step of the train.

Each technology has its key applications. Liqui-Cel® membrane contactors remove dissolved gases. Electropure EDI delivers continuous ultrapure water without chemical regeneration.

Liqui-Cel® modules pass water along the outside (shell side) of microporous hydrophobic hollow-fibre membranes while a sweep gas or vacuum is applied on the inside (tube side). Dissolved gases diffuse across the membrane pores and are then removed. The water never undergoes a phase change. The result is a footprint and operability advantage over forced-draft or vacuum degasification — particularly valuable in semiconductor facilities where space is at a premium.

Liqui-Cel® membrane contactors are specified for RO permeate decarbonation to protect the EDI module from scaling, and for dissolved oxygen removal in semiconductor process water, boiler-feed water, and pure-steam-generation systems.

Electrodeionisation combines ion-exchange resins with semi-permeable ion-exchange membranes and an applied DC electrical field. The field continuously regenerates the resins by pulling ions across the membranes into concentrate streams, eliminating the chemical regeneration cycles required by conventional mixed-bed polishers. No acid, no caustic, no waste-neutralisation step.

Electropure EDI (manufactured by SnowPure) is the modern standard for the polishing step in ultrapure-water systems feeding semiconductor process water, high-pressure boiler systems, and pharmaceutical WFI. Electropure EDI modules are available through Evergreen Technologies Pvt. Ltd. for new specifications and retrofits.
